A bit more about localities included with this program

Velebit Each nation has its own holy mount - the Greeks have Olympus, the nations of central Europe have the Alps while the Japanese have Mount Fuji. Croatia's very own holy mountain is Velebit. Its peaks are the home of the Croat's good spirit - Vila Velebita (the Fairy of Velebit). Even though it is not as high as Dinara, Kamesnica or Biokovo, this mountain occupies the central position in the collective consciousness of the Croatian people. It is an integral part of the national identity, a symbol of Croatia which distinguishes it in the world. Velebit has earned this place in the spiritual relief of Croatia owing to its geographic position, its peculiar features and the place it has in the hearts and minds of the people.

Velebit is the longest mountain of the Dinaric system. It rises along 145 km in a gentle northwest-southeast curve between Vratnik saddle and the Zrmanja valley. The saddles diagonally divide its giant belly and represent the traditional division of the mountain range into: the northern area (between Vratnik and Veliki Alan), the central area (between Veliki Alan and Baske Ostarije), the southern area (between Ostarije and Mali Alan) and the southeastern area (between Veliki Alan and the upper Zrmanja valley). Its western border is Velebit Channel of the Adriatic Sea, while to the east it borders with Lika-Gacka plateau at 425-600 m above sea level. Its width, in air line terms, varies between 30 km in the north and only 10 km in the south. Inspite of the fact that it leaves the impression of a colossal mountain, Velebit is not particularly high. Its highest peak - Vaganski vrh - is only 1757 m high.

VELEBIT – PARK OF NATIONAL PARKS
Owing to their characteristic relief, vegetation and landscape peculiarities, certain narrower parts of Velebit have been singled out and included into the appropriate protection categories. In 1949 Paklenica National Park (102 km2) was set up in the southern area of the mountain range. Most valuable areas of north and central Velebit are protected within the category of strict and special reserves.
Following its 1978 inclusion into thenetwork of international biosphere reserves (UNESCO program Man and the Biosphere) the Croatian Parliament proclaimed the entire Velebit a nature park in 1981. In 1999 Sjeverni Velebit (North Velebit) National Park - 109 km2 - was established in northern regions of the mountain range. It includes the strict reserves Hajducki and Rozanski kukovi, the special botanical reserve Zavizan-Balinovac-Zavizanska (Velika) Kosa, Velebit botanical garden in the north and Stirovaca - a special reserve of forest vegetation in central Velebit.
With right we can call Velebit PARK OF NATIONAL PARKS.
The most valuable natural landmarks of Velebit include the caves called Cerovacke pecine (southern Velebit) and a pit called Lukina jama (northern Velebit). Many smaller caves and pits and a number of important geomorphologic objects (Kiza, Tulove grede, kuk Stapina etc.) and hydrological objects (the spring and course of the Zrmanja etc.) must not be overlooked either
Murter is a smaller island between Zadar and Šibenik (12km long and 2km wide). Because of its location, and closeness to Kornati islands and of the island connection with land in Tisno (bridge), with its towns Jezera, Betina, Murter and Tisno, it is a most important nautical base in Adriatic sea.

Jezera are a typical Dalmatian fishing village town with population of approximately 800 people. It was named after large pools of water which flow into the valley during autumn and wintertime and look like real lakes but disappear with first rays of sun in the spring. From cultural monuments we have to mention church of Our Lady of the Health (Gospe od zdravlja), built in 1720. For gastronomy lovers, private restaurants guarantee quality with their rich offer of fish and other specialties. Nearby there is an apartment settlement “Lovisca” and car-camp “Lovisca”. Of course there’s a modern ACI marina “Jezera” with capacity of 250 berths and all accompanying contents.

Sali is a small Dalmatian village located on Dugi otok (Long island), that got it’s name because of old salt pants.
Beside tourism, olive growing, viticulture, fishing and processing of fish etc are important “industries”.
Sali offers miscellaneous water sport contents and diving, beside quality accommodation (both hotel and private), gastronomy offer of fish specialities. Near village there are small islets, nice bays and coves, where we definitely have to extract Nature park Telašćica that with its beauty belongs to top of Croatian tourist offer.
Telašćica, southeastern part of Dugi otok, together with sea belt and 19 islets, 6 of them within Telašćica bay and 13 outside of the bay, were named Nature park in March 1988 after being extracted from National Park Kornati.

Nacionalni park Kornati the largest and densest archipelago in the Adriatic Sea; consists of 147 islands, islets and reefs comprising an area of 69 sq km, scattered at an area of 234 sq km. From the 14th century the island of Kornat had several names: Insula Sancte Marie, Stomorin Otok, Tarac, Toreta (Tureta). In the 17th century the archipelago got the name Coronati.
Their history goes all the way to Neolithic and oldest archeological findings confirm presence of Illyrians and Romans on this area. On the island Panitula there are remains of medieval tower, and on Jadra there is a church that dates from 16th century. It is interesting to mention that one American movie was filmed on the island Mana where we can still find remains of the movie set.
There are no permanent settlements on Kornati, while the last one is mentioned in the 13th century by the name of Toreta.
Perhaps the most interesting phenomena on Kornati are cliffs or so called crowns. They can be found on places where there are amazing views toward open sea – and the highest ones are on Klobučar (80 m), Mani (65 m), Rašipu velom (64 m) etc.
Under the sea, cliffs are 100 m long.
The Kornati area is one of the richest fishing grounds in the Adriatic.
Crystal clear sea in turquoise color in combination with other islands of specific relief with its grayish – white pasture karst presents real heaven on earth.
Therefore Kornati are most desirable destination for numerous boaters and yachting enthusiasts.
Beside numerous coves appropriate for boaters, there are ACI marina Piškera on the island Panitula with 120 berths.
In 1980 islands were set aside as a national park and the Park is managed by a special management body with the seat in Murter.

In the end what more to say about Kornat?
A man named George Bernard Shaw wrote "On the last day of the Creation God desired to crown his work, and thus created the Kornati Islands out of tears, stars and breathe".
